Sir Elton John has postponed several shows in Florida.
The “Candle In the Wind” singer, 71, was scheduled to perform at Orlando’s Amway Center Tuesday night, but the sold-out crowd was informed half an hour after showtime that the concert had been canceled.
John’s representative, Fran Curtis, confirmed to USA TODAY that the Orlando stop on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour was abruptly delayed due to “an ear infection.”
Amway Center took to Twitter to spread the news: “We’re sorry to announce that due to an ear infection, Elton John is unable to perform tonight. The rescheduled Orlando date will be announced in the near future so please hold onto your tickets.”
Several media outlets speculated that the concert was canceled over a credible bomb threat, but the rumor was quickly dispelled.
“Any speculation or claims of a bomb threat are false and completely unfounded,” City of Orlando Marketing Manager Tanya Bowley told USA TODAY. “Tonight’s cancellation was indeed due to Elton John’s ear infection as previously shared from the outset.”
Amway Center noted that “there was never a bomb threat,” adding “the new Orlando and Tampa dates will be announced in the near future.”
Despite the reasoning, fans couldn’t help but voice their frustration on Twitter.
@CaptianPainway shared before and after images of the crowd once they learned John would not take the stage: “Taken 5 minutes apart. Elton John’s #FarewellYellowBrickRoad show cancelled. We were all sitting and waiting for 1/2 hour.
“As someone who also went home from work early sick, I hope he feels better, but dang,” she continued.
Other fans were less understanding. User @SuziBrady1982 shared a picture of her son crying after learning the news.
“#EltonJohn I can’t believe you canceled an 8pm concert at 8.25pm,” she wrote. “No-one could have called that earlier? Seriously? Unbelievable. My 8 year old mega fan is devastated.”
“Holy c***/ $250 on tickets/ $150 hotel/ $30 in drinks/ Elton John cancelled for the night… Priceless,” another wrote.
Wednesday’s sold-out show in Tampa, Florida at the Amalie Arena met a similar fate.
“Due to an ear infection and doctor’s orders, the 11/28 @eltonofficial Tampa show is being POSTPONED to a date to be determined,” the arena tweeted.
All tix for the original date are valid for the rescheduled date. If a guest cannot attend the new date, refunds are available at point of purchase.
The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which John billed as his final stretch of concerts before he retires from the road, will last an entire year, tentatively wrapping in September 2019.
