Oprah Winfrey has been trending on Twitter, but not for a good reason. Social media users have been spreading unconfirmed reports that the media mogul has been arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking.
According to the rumors, the 66-year-old television producer was running a sex ring with Harvey Weinstein. The disgraced movie mogul was allegedly the one who reported it to authorities as he’s accused of snitching on everybody, including the former daytime talk show queen, to get less time in jail ahead of his sentencing.
The rumors further claimed that Oprah’s mansion in Boca Raton had been raided in relation to the case and feds found miles of tunnels under her house. Additionally, Tom Hanks, who is currently holed up in Australia following his coronavirus diagnosis, and Oprah’s best friend Gayle King were said to be involved in the sex ring as well.
But the scandalous reports turn out to be bogus. Shutting down the rumors, Oprah took to Twitter to state, “Just got a phone call that my name is trending. And being trolled for some awful FAKE thing. It’s NOT TRUE. Haven’t been raided, or arrested.”
Inserting message about a real issue, coronavirus, she added, “Just sanitizing and self distancing with the rest of the world. Stay safe everybody.”
Responding to the fake news, a person blamed it on “someone was bored while in quarantine.” Someone similarly reacted, “people are really this bored already?? to start a rumor like this…” Another claimed, “This story is completely fake and was started by that far right group Qanon(or whatever nonsense they call themselves now).”
While many didn’t believe the rumors in the first place and quickly jumped to Oprah’s defense, some others brought up old reports that Oprah allegedly tried to cover up sexual abuse at her girls’ school in Africa more than a decade ago. “About time people know the truth… it’s been around for years now,” one commented. Another person tweeted, “I do not know if @Oprah has been arrested for child trafficking at this time. But it wouldn’t surprise me..”
